Is Attic Insulation Important in Your Home?

Most people know that they need insulation in their walls but not in the attic. This is especially true for people who keep their attic closed and don’t typically access it for any reason. It leaves plenty of people wondering whether they should invest in attic insulation.

The answer to this question requires knowledge of a couple of basic facts. The first is that studies show that anywhere from 50 percent to 70 percent of electric bills go to heating and cooling.

The second thing to understand is that a great deal of heat and air escapes through your roof. If you ever go into your uninsulated attic, you’ll notice that it’s sweltering there in the summer and freezing in the winter – even if the rest of your home seems to be okay.

The air and heat that are in your attic then fight with the temperature in the rest of your home. This means that your HVAC unit has to work harder, leading to higher energy bills.

Returning to the first fact mentioned, the question then becomes how much of your utility bill is due to a lack of insulation in your attic? The answer: probably more than you wish to pay. So is attic insulation important? Yes, it’s essential if you want to keep your energy bills to a minimum.
